Situated in Shuangjiang Township, Liping County, Huanggang Dong Village(黄岗侗寨) boats not only pristine beauty, laidback countryside atmosphere but also the best-preserved lifestyle, customs, folk residences and festivals of Dong people in Guizhou. For those who want to sample the most intact and authentic Dong culture in China, it is a choice destination.
As the cradle of Kam Grand Choirs sung by men, Huanggang Dong Village is also responsible for two interesting festivals: Tai Guan Ren(抬官人) and Goddess of Thunder Worship Festival (Han Tian Jie喊天节), the former features an interesting parade while the later a solemn and intriguing worship ritual.
Tai Guan Ren
On the third day of the first lunar month, locals will parade around the whole Huanggang Dong Village. A team composed of clowns, beautiful Dong girls and a Guan Ren( governor) acted by a boy form the essential part. Clad in quaint yet fanciful attires, Guan Ren will sit on a sedan chair and be carried by the clowns, whose missions are to entertain onlookers through funny dances. To make it more engaging, they will be “robed” by “beggars” during the process. When they reach a square in front of a drum tower, girls in this team will dispatch snacks to villagers, while girls waiting them there will greet and challenge the Guan Ren by euphonious folk songs and ask for Lucky Money (Hong Bao). Guan Ren is expected to show hospitality and give the biggest sum of money to the girl who sings best. Guanren and these clowns can dance with any girl in this village. During Dong New Year, Dong villages will visit each other. Tai Guan Ren stands out as the most interesting part of it.
