The Gaeml is an industrious,brave and hospitable people, mainly living in the border of Guizhou Province, Hunan Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It[/img]The Gaeml people usually live by the rivers but as much of their land is hilly of mountianous, they have built an extense network of rice terraces. Millet, corn and sweet potatoes are grown as staples in the poorer mountain areas. Cash corps are cotton, tobacco, rape for oil and soybean. Sticky rice is the preferred staple. Being sticky, it can be eaten with the fingers and is taken to the feilds in basckets strapped onto belts when the men and women work far from home. Oiled tea is a specaility offered to guests, prepared by heating tea oil, puffed sticky rice, peanuts and soybeans in a work over the fire. The Gaeml live in villages in wooden houses two-to-four storeyes high. Fir tends to be the favored wood. Domestic animals are kept on the ground level and the upper floor serves as living quaters. The elderly are provided with bedrooms at the back of the house, usually heated. Many villages feature large wooden Drum-towers of magnificent design and traditionally constructed without the use of nails. These towers serve as meeting places for the villagers, disputes are solved here, stories told and songs sung. People also meet here on festival days. The most famous Drum-towers include Zengchong Tower at Congjiang County and Zhaoxing five towers at Liping County,Guizhou Province.
